History Tidbit:

Memorable Speeches

Daniel Webster's Seventh of March Speech (March 7, 1850), I wish to speak today not as a Massachusetts man, nor as a Northern man, but as an American, and a member of the Senate of the United States, while receiving plaudits in the rest of the country for its conciliatory tone, costs him much in the way of political support at home, leading to his resignation from the Senate.

In support of his Compromise of 1850 measures, Henry Clay says, on the Senate floor,
I implore, as the best blessing which Heaven can bestow upon me here upon earth, that if the direful and sad event of the dissolution of the union shall happen, I may not survive to behold the sad and heart-rending spectacle.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, after the Battle of Britain, August 20, 1940

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. All hearts go out to the Fighter pilots, whose brilliant actions we see with our own eyes day after day, but we must never forget that all the time, night after night, month after month, our bomber squadrons travel far into Germany, find their targets in the darkness…aim their attacks, often under the heaviest fire, often with serious loss…and inflict shattering blows upon the whole of the technical and war-making structure of the Nazi power.

Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, 1940

I can run wild for six months … after that, I have no expectation of success. (The Battle of Midway, the naval battle considered to be the turning point of World War II, occurred exactly 6 months after the Pearl Harbor attack.) In the movie, Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), Yamamoto says, after the attack on Pearl Harbor,
I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve. (But an actual quote by Admiral Yamamoto has never been confirmed.)

United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, December 8, 1941

Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan…

Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya. Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong. Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam. Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island. And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island…

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.

Eisenhower's Farewell Address to the Nation January 17, 1961

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

John F. Kennedy--Inaugural Address delivered January 20, 1961

Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans -- born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage, and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world. Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate.

And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.

Ronald Reagan, by the Berlin Wall, June 12, 1987

We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!
